On 13th December, 1914, the 2nd Scottish Borderers battalion of 13 Brigade, 5th Division moved into trenches at Lindenhoek in Belgium, to the south of Ypres, where they remained until relieved on 16th December. Conditions here were appalling with the trenches knee deep in mud, dead bodies lying around creating an awful smell and the constant attention of German shell and sniper fire which resulted in 30 casualties during the time spent here. One of these was Albert Sturm who died from wounds on 16th December. |
